Turkey fryers have the potential to cause fire and serious injury so be sure you know how to safely use the fryer. Follow these fried turkey cooking safety tips to keep everyone safe on Thanksgiving:

  • Set up the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away from your home.
  • Keep children and pets away from the fryer
  • Never ever leave it unattended.
  • Place the fryer on a flat, level surface and make sure the oil stays even and steady at all times.
  • Make sure your Thanksgiving turkey is completely thawed and dry because any extra water may cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over.
  • Be sure to keep track of the oil's temperature because many fryers do not have their own thermostats.
  • Be careful when touching the turkey fryer as the lid and handle can become very hot to the touch.
  • Choose a smaller turkey for frying.
  • Wear goggles to shield your eyes, use oven mitts to protect your hands and arms.
  • Leave 2 feet between the tank and the burner when using a propane-powered fryer.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites.
